Midsummer Feast 2026
Details:
A late summer activity, we are going to give back to the family that has given so much to Troop 1865 over the past 50 years.
Since the 70's, the troop has held a canoe trip on the Cacapon River. One year in the late 70's (in the dark ages before cell phones), part of the group became separated. It was getting dark, so that crew pulled over to river left when they saw a house up on the banks with the lights on. Knocking on the door, they met Ethel Stayton who let them use her phone and camp for the night. Ever since, the Stayton family has shown our troop such hospitality, even making our appearance a Stayton Family Memorial Day tradition with a feast for the troop and extended family as we take out from the river.
Having missed this feast this year, we are going to give back to the Stayton family. On Saturday, August 15, we will make a day trip to the farm to prepare a feast for them! We will set up patrol kitchens and cook as we do on campouts, each patrol bringing a dish to the potluck style bbq.
Why this event? It has multiple facets:
-
Thanks to the Stayton family. I know for certain Ethel will be touched by "her boys" that she has loved dearly for 50 years.
-
Excellent patrol cooking practice for the scouts without the distractions of a regular camping trip.
-
Parents welcome and encouraged. See how your scouts cook (without having to camp), and see where we always end our canoe trip.
